Camp !magine
An all encompassing program that empowers our students to participate in the community through project based learning, building lasting friendships and fostering success in their academic and IEP goals. Click on our logo to see a collection of photos from this summer.
HISTORY: Camp !magine, founded in 2009, follows in the footsteps of Avon Lake's "Handi-Camp," which was formed in 1987 by Frank and Nadge Herceg, and Lee Smelko, parents of children with multi-handicap needs. Handi-Camp was sponsored and housed in the Avon Lake United Church of Christ. The main objective of the camp was to provide educational and recreational activities throughout the year for children with special needs. Camp !magine honors all the directors, teachers, aides, volunteers, parents and campers that supported and enjoyed Handi-Camp for over 20 years.
This six week program geared toward students with special needs. Activities are based on target goals and objectives derived from the current IEP, but they include: daily living activities, crafts, games, community service projects, hikes, swimming and even a day at the baseball game.
Facilities: Avon Lake High School
Staff: Certified teachers and several adult volunteers. Trained teen volunteers.
